Germinate Cannabis Seeds: Step by Step
Brief Summary
- Prepare your space and fill your pots with media
- Prepare your water solution and soak seeds
- Water pots with solution and plant seeds half inch deep
- Vigilantly protect seeds from birds, rodents, and insects. They WILL eat your seedlings if left unprotected outdoors.
SOIL MIXTURE
Cannabis seeds should be germinated in a light soil mixture, that has very little nutrient content and drains well. First, decide what grow space you need and collect all the various items you’ll need to begin your home grow. Next it’s time to start prepping the soil mixture that is best for germination.
Mixing Media Step 1
Plan on 80% of your soil mixture being an inert, fast- draining, media like Pro-Mix HP Mycorrhizae or your favorite organic inert media. Expect your mix to possess tremendous drainage capacity, elevated air porosity, and very low water retention. Coupled with the high fibrous characteristics of the peat moss and you’ll have a strong foundation ideal for a successful cannabis seed germination. You can buy a pre-made germination mix or mix your own.
Mixing Media Step 2
Thoroughly mix the Pro-Mix HP with about 20% soil. Top soil, native soil, or a good potting soil will suffice.
Mixing Media Step 3
Fill your 3″-4” seedling pots or cell trays with your formulation of inert mix and soil.
TREATED WATER SOLUTION
Next, it’s time to prepare the treated water solution. Having a watering solution rich with healthy vitamins, hormones, mycorrhizae, and beneficial bacteria that your seedlings are going to love is imperative to giving your cannabis seeds the best chance to successfully germinate. Then grow into the dank nug yielding marijuana plants you want them to be.
Mixing Treated Water Solution Step 1
Use distilled water to fill your water reservoir so you can avoid having to oxygenate tap water for 24 hours.
Mixing Treated Water Solution Step 2
Add Superthrive Plant Vitamin Solution at ⅓ recommended strength per 5 gallons of water used. This vitamin and hormone rich solution will help develop strong roots on your cannabis plants.
Mixing Treated Water Solution Step 3
Add Great White Mycorrhizae inoculant at a rate of 1 tsp per 5 gallons of water used. This super diverse and highly concentrated mix of beneficial microbes will also contribute to the strength of your cannabis plants’ root system. Expect greater water retention and nutrient absorption.
Mixing Treated Water Solution Step 4
The last root system enhancer you should add is the Roots Excelurator Gold from House & Garden. Formulated for a soil mixture packed with coco perlite substrates, Excelurator Gold provides another boost of healthy additions using a proprietary kelp and seed extract that will stimulate incredible root production and vigor.
Almost there– let’s get those seeds prepped and in their seedling pots. Go ahead and water your pots with your nutrient-rich water solution and poke some holes with your finger at a depth of a ½ inch.
Next, soak your seeds for about 30 minutes in a cup of the treated water solution. Soaking your seeds too long could risk drowning them.
Lastly, carefully plant your seeds in holes making sure to orient the seeds with the point down and the eye up. Gently cover up the seeds with the surrounding media.
SEED GERMINATION
Your seeds should sprout within 2-10 days and plan to transplant them to their vegetation stage pots at 2-4 weeks post germination. And remember to protect your space, indoor or outdoor, vigilantly from organic invaders like birds, insects, and rodents. They WILL eat all of your seedlings if given the opportunity.
If planting your seeds outdoors we HIGHLY recommend a small camping tent, completely zipped tight. This will protect / shield your seedlings from harmful invaders
