Maine Cannabis Laws Passed: November 8, 2016
Maine cannabis laws are summarized by the following:
Possession
In Maine, adults aged 21 and over can possess up 2.5 ounces of a combination of cannabis, cannabis concentrate, and cannabis products, including no more than 5 grams of cannabis concentrate.
Cultivation
Maine cannabis laws allow persons aged 21+ to cultivate up to 6 mature cannabis plants per person for adult use unauthorized, up to 12 immature cannabis plants, and an unlimited number of seedlings for personal use.
A few other key things to know about cultivating cannabis at home in Maine:
- Keep it out of sight. An adult who grows plants for personal use must make sure to keep it out-of-sight of the public. In other words, don’t plant your garden behind the hedge under the windows facing the street.
- Second, lock up your garden. Anyone under the age of 21 found sneaking around in your garden will spell trouble for the homeowner.
- Finally, if the police do show up at the house to check on your plants, make sure to tag them with a legible label that includes name, driver’s license or state ID number, and a notation that the plants are being grown as authorized by law.

Maine Cannabis Laws Fun Facts
It took four years from the passing of the Marijuana Legalization Act in 2016 for the first ounce of recreational marijuana to be sold in Maine.
Out of the gates in 2020, Maine sold $321 million worth of medical and recreational cannabis. Annual sales are projected to top $432 million in 2025.
That’s a huge number that the Canadians are no longer getting–sorry Canada, we know how nice everyone is up there.
